Paris, June 26 (OLA NEWS) – The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on Wednesday, as tensions over Iran’s nuclear program surged following recent military strikes and diplomatic fallout.
Grossi’s visit comes days after US and Israeli forces targeted key Iranian nuclear sites, prompting Tehran’s parliament to suspend cooperation with the IAEA and accuse the agency of failing to condemn the attacks. Macron, returning from the NATO summit in The Hague, emphasized the urgency of restoring the IAEA’s mission in Iran and reaffirmed France’s support for the agency’s oversight role. Both leaders discussed the state of Iran’s nuclear facilities, radiological risks, and the need to uphold non-proliferation standards.
The stakes are high: the IAEA has been denied access to Iranian sites, with Grossi warning that inspectors must return to accurately assess uranium stockpiles and ensure transparency. France, a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal, is conducting its own assessment of the damage and will coordinate with allies on next steps. The outcome of these talks could shape the future of nuclear diplomacy in the region, as Western powers weigh whether to reimpose UN sanctions and Iran signals a shift in its engagement with international oversight.
